A leaked mobile phone conversation containing a threat to shoot Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker from Chattogram- 15, Shahjahan Chowdhury, and claims of payments to local officials has stirred controversy in Lohagara upazila of the district.
The audio, circulated on social media, allegedly features Arman Uddin, a longtime personal assistant to Chattogram-15 MP Shahjahan Chowdhury, and local Jubo Dal leader Md Tarekul Haque.
In the recording, Tarekul appears to warn the MP against entering Lohagara.
At one point, he says he will shoot the lawmaker in the leg if he comes to the area and adds that "Arman Saheb" is the real MP there.
Arman appears to respond by saying he tries to discourage the MP from visiting Lohagara but that local people pressure him to come.
The conversation also includes allegations involving illegal sand extraction and hill cutting.
Tarekul claims that after Eid-ul-Azha, an additional superintendent of police from the Satkania Circle damaged five sand-extraction machines in the Panchhari area.
In response, Arman allegedly said operators have to pay money to the additional superintendent of police, the police station and the upazila administration to maintain control over sand extraction sites.
He also claimed a "positive settlement" has been reached with the upazila administration and suggests expanding extraction activities in the Putibila area.
Local sources alleged that Tarekul has links to a group involved in illegal sand extraction and hill cutting in Lohagara.
They also alleged that Arman, despite serving as the MP's personal assistant, wields considerable influence in Chattogram city and South Chattogram.
When contacted, Arman declined to comment on the leaked audio.
Attempts to reach Tarekul failed as his mobile phone was switched off.
Denying the allegations, Additional Superintendent of Police Ariful Islam Siddique of Satkania Circle said, "I have no involvement in this. Arman used to approach me on various issues. I have evidence of those communications stored on my WhatsApp."
Mohammad Abdullah, officer-in-charge Lohagara Police Station, said, "I joined here only a month ago. I have no involvement with any such matter. When I contacted Arman about the audio, he remained silent."
Repeated attempts to contact Lohagara Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Bayezid-bin-Akhand for comment were unsuccessful.
