The Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested two people for allegedly stealing copper cables connected to the “red telephone” line at the prime minister’s Secretariat office.
A CTTC team arrested the suspects during separate drives in and around Dhaka. The arrestees were identified as Ranjan Chandra, 26, and Rejakul Islam, 32.
A CTTC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Ranjan, an outsourcing worker at the Secretariat, allegedly stole around eight kg of copper cable and sold it to Rejakul Islam. The official added that a syndicate may be involved in the theft of cables from the Secretariat area.
During the Eid holidays, copper cables installed between the Old Secretariat Building-2 and New Building-1 were reportedly cut and stolen. These lines were used for key government communications, including connections involving the prime minister’s office, cabinet division, and public administration ministry.
On June 1, Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL) filed a written complaint with the ministry of home affairs over the incident.
