Police have recovered the bodies of three members of the same family from a house in the Amirabad area of Madaripur town. The incident took place late Sunday night.
The deceased were identified as Chinmoy Das of Kalagachia area in Sadar upazila, his wife Isha Das, and their eight-month-old child.
According to police and local sources, Misti Barai, wife of Italy-based expatriate Jatin Barai from Satpara area of Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj, had been living as a tenant for nearly three years at a house owned by Santona Rani Chand, wife of the late Birendranath Dutta, in Amirabad.
On Sunday afternoon, Chinmoy Das arrived at the house with his wife and infant child, introducing himself as Misti’s cousin. Later that night, after receiving information, police broke open the room and recovered the bodies.
Madaripur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad said Misti Barai was alone in an adjacent room at the time of the incident, and police responded after receiving a call from her.
He said police are investigating whether the deaths were the result of murder or suicide. However, Misti Barai has initially been placed under suspicion.
The bodies were later sent to the morgue of Madaripur 250-bed District Sadar Hospital for autopsies. Police are continuing their investigation to uncover the actual circumstances surrounding the incident.
