At least 12 people suffered burn injuries in a gas explosion at the canteen of the JERA Meghnaghat Power Plant in Sonargaon upazila of Narayanganj today.
The injured were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
The injured power plant officials are Nazmul Sheikh, 40, Saiful Islam, 30, Ramizul, 45, Tuhin Sheikh, 30, Monir Hossain, 45, Osman Gani, 30, Suprovat Ghosh, 42, and Badrul Haidar, 50. Three canteen workers -- Amir, 25, Shankar, 25, Kawsar, 30, and Al-Amin, 45 -- also among the injured.
Fakhrul Islam, safety officer of the power plant, said the victims were standing in a queue for lunch at the canteen around 1:00pm when an explosion occurred inside the kitchen.
“After cooking, someone apparently left the gas stove on. When a matchstick was lit later, the accumulated gas might have triggered the explosion and fire,” he said.
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the burn institute, said 12 injured people were brought to the hospital in the afternoon.
“The severity of their burn injuries is still being determined. Details will be provided later,” he added.
