The administration of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has decided to abolish the ward quota in the face of student protests.

The university Vice Chancellor Prof Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan made the announcement around 12:15AM on Wednesday after an emergency meeting of the Central Admission Test Committee.

Earlier on Tuesday, the university staff and the students were staging protests with contradictory demands over 'Ward Quota (Quota for employees' children)'. The protesting students brought out a procession from Bottala, marching through various halls and the central library and later gathered in front of the administrative building.

The university's Officer-Employee Unity Council, however, called for an indefinite strike from Wednesday (February 5).

In the wake of the situation, the JU administration sat with the VC on Tuesday afternoon and after several hours' of discussion, around 12:15AM, Kamrul Ahsan decided to cancel the ward quota.

The VC said that the decision to 'completely cancel' the quota was taken in an emergency meeting of the university's central admissions and test management committee.

A notification to abolish the quota will be issued on Wednesday, he further added.
