An activist of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Khorshed Alam, was killed in a knief attack in Cox’s Bazar town last night.

The incident took place around 10:30pm at Kabita Chattar in the town, according to police and witnesses.

Officer-in-Charge of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station, Chhomiuddin, said law enforcers were working to identify and arrest those involved. “Witnesses and people close to the victim are being questioned. A woman who was with him is in police custody,” he said.

According to police and witnesses, a group of unidentified attackers assaulted Khorshed. He suffered serious injuries after being stabbed multiple times. His friend Shah Alam and others rescued and took him to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Hospital sources said an initial examination found stab wounds on his abdomen and legs.

Khorshed Alam hailed from the Isulor Ghona area under Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila and was involved in student politics in the town. He was also known locally as a “July warrior”.

Fahim-Uz-Zaman, former general secretary of Cox’s Bazar JCD, confirmed that the deceased was a JCD activist. He added that Khorshed would have received a post once a new committee was formed later.

Police have taken Tarin, who was accompanying the victim during the incident, into custody for questioning.

Before being taken into custody, Tarin told journalists that while they were near Kabita Chattar sea beach, a group of miscreants surrounded them and demanded valuables from Khorshed. At one stage, the attackers accused him of assaulting someone named Arif and then stabbed him several times.
