Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher on Wednesday said President Mohammed Shahabuddin has no right to address the National Parliament.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with opposition MPs at the Parliament, Taher said the President does not have the authority to address the session and questioned why the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was proceeding with the move.
“The President has no right to deliver a speech at the session. It is not clear why the BNP is taking this step,” he said.
Regarding the post of Deputy Speaker, Taher said the opposition parties had discussed the matter during the meeting and would announce their decision once a formal proposal is placed.
Earlier, elected MPs of the 11-party alliance held a meeting chaired by Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Leader of the Opposition in parliament Dr Shafiqur Rahman.
During the meeting, the lawmakers also finalised their plans for the upcoming parliamentary session, including notices to be submitted by the opposition, adjournment motions and topics for general discussion.
