Three people, including two drivers, were killed, and six others seriously injured in a head-on collision between an army truck and a bus on the Mymensingh-Haluaghat road in Phulpur municipality in Mymensingh this morning.
One of the deceased was identified as Sergeant Rezaul, 35, the driver of the army truck. The identities of the two other victims -- the bus driver and a pedestrian -- could not be known immediately.
Md Abdullah Al Mamun, additional superintendent of police (administration) of Mymensingh, said the incident took place when a Sherpur-bound bus collided head-on with a Mymensingh-bound army truck, killing an unidentified pedestrian on the spot around 10:45am.
The injured bus driver died at Phulpur Upazila Health Complex, and army truck driver, Sergeant Rezaul, succumbed to his injuries at Tarakanda Upazila Health Complex while undergoing treatment.
The other injured persons are currently undergoing treatment at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Police said army personnel were returning to Mymensingh from the Phulpur camp when the incident happened.
Members of the army, police, and Fire Service and Civil Defence conducted rescue operations and took immediate steps to ease traffic congestion. Traffic movement on the road is normal now.
Police said further legal proceedings are underway.
