A polling officer died after falling ill shortly after voting began at a centre in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria on Thursday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mojahidul Islam, 48, a resident of Haluapara in Sarail. He was a teacher at Panishwar Islami Foundation and is survived by two sons and a daughter.

According to Presiding Officer Shamim Al Mamun, Mojahidul was on duty at booth No 2 at the Syed Sirajul Islam Auditorium centre. Soon after polling began, he complained of feeling unwell and stepped out. He later collapsed and was rushed to the Sarail Upazila Health Complex.

He died while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Dr Shyamal Ranjan Debnath of Sarail Upazila Health Complex confirmed the death, saying it is suspected that Mojahidul suffered a heart attack.
