A Bangladeshi man was killed at the Kulaura border in Moulvibazar yesterday over a land dispute.
The deceased is Ahad Ali, 34, a resident of Eolachhara Punji in the Murichhara area.
The deceased's wife, Jamirun Nesa, filed a case today in this regard, said Kulaura Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Golam Afsar.
The incident occurred yesterday on the Bangladesh side of the zero line at the Eolachhara slum area, bordering the Karmadha union of the upazila.
The accused are Haidar Ali, Karim Ali, son of Haidar Ali, Rowshan Ali, Jamir Ali, and Gaffar Ali, all hailing from the East Irani area of Gajhatila Police Station in Unakoti District, Tripura, India.
The remaining two accused are Bangladeshi nationals, whose identities were not disclosed by police, along with 4-5 unidentified individuals.
Quoting local sources, OC Golam Afsar stated that the deceased, Ahad's father-in-law Jabid Ali, owned land on the Indian side of the barbed wire fence. Indian national Haidar Ali had rented the land but failed to pay the rent regularly, leading to a dispute between him and Ahad. Haidar called Ahad to the border yesterday afternoon, where an altercation broke out, during which the accused attacked Ahad with sharp weapons, injuring his head and hands.
Ahad was found in critical condition and was first taken to Kulaura Hospital. Afterward, the on-duty doctor, Sarmin Farhana Jerin, referred him to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital in Sylhet for better treatment, where he later died.
Ali Hossain, uncle of the deceased, said that after the attack, Haidar Ali crossed the barbed wire fence and fled to India.
"We want justice for the murder," he added.
Sylvester Pathang, a UP member from Ward No. 3 of the local Karmadha Union Parishad (UP), said, "As far as I know, Haidar Ali had a dispute over the land of Ahad's father-in-law on the other side of the border. Ahad was killed during a dispute over that land."
After the incident, the BGB and police visited the scene.
OC Golam Afsar said that the deceased's body is currently at the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue, and it will be handed over to the family after an autopsy.
