The government vehicle carrying two assistant revenue officers (AROs) of Chittagong Custom House was vandalised by unidentified miscreants in the port city's Agrabad area this morning.
The incident took place at CDA Gate-1 near Agrabad Jamburi Field when the two officers — ARO Asaduzzaman and his colleague, whose name could not be known immediately — were heading to their office by the car.
Asaduzzaman is attached to the Customs Audit, Investigation and Research (AIR) unit.
Confirming the attack, AIR unit Deputy Commissioner (DC) Tarek Mahmud told, "Three unidentified masked men riding a motorbike intercepted their car and vandalised it on their way to the office."
"At one point, the miscreants shouted 'shoot, shoot', when the officers got off the car and ran for their lives," he added.
Hearing their shouts, the miscreants left the scene immediately, he said.
"We informed the police, and they later visited the spot," he added.
It appears that Asaduzzaman may have been the target of the attack, as the miscreants focused on the side of the car where he was seated, he said.
Recently, Customs managed to bust several rings that imported contraband items, which triggered anger among several syndicates. Those gangs had threatened Asad earlier, said DC Tarek.
Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (West Zone) Hossain Mohammad Kabir said they have started an investigation to identify the attackers.
