Leaders and activists of Inqilab Moncho on Friday blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital, demanding swift justice for the murder of July revolutionary and the organisation’s spokesperson, Sharif Osman Hadi.

After Friday prayers, the Dhaka University (DU) unit of Inqilab Moncho brought out a procession from the university’s central mosque. The march proceeded along several key roads before gathering at Shahbagh, where protesters held a sit-in.

The blockade brought traffic to a standstill in Shahbagh and adjoining areas, including Katabon, TSC, and Matsya Bhaban. At the time of filing this report, leaders and activists continued their sit-in at the intersection.

During the protest, demonstrators chanted slogans demanding the immediate arrest of the perpetrators and exemplary punishment for them.

In a statement, Inqilab Moncho said its movement would continue until authorities ensured a prompt and exemplary trial for Sharif Osman Hadi’s murder.

The organisation had earlier announced the protest programme on its verified Facebook page on Thursday night, calling for prayers and processions across the country, seeking forgiveness for the departed soul of Shaheed Hadi and justice for his killing.

One of the leaders of the July Uprising, Hadi was shot and critically injured on Box Culvert Road in the capital’s Paltan area on 12 December.

He sustained bullet injuries to the head and was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that night.

He was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on 15 December after being flown to Singapore by air ambulance. He passed away on 18 December night while undergoing treatment there.

Hadi was also a prospective independent candidate for the upcoming national election from the Dhaka-8 constituency.
