A day after the government issued an ordinance, the Supreme Court Secretariat got its first secretary.

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed today assigned SC Registrar General Mohammad Habibur Rahman Siddiquee to serve as the secretariat's secretary in order to run its operations until further order.

"Under the directive from the president, the law ministry issued the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, 2025 on November 30 for establishing its secretariat, aiming to ensure full independence of the judiciary.

"In continuation of this development, the chief justice of Bangladesh on December 1 assigned Supreme Court Registrar General Mohammad Habibur Rahman Siddiquee to serve as the secretary of the newly formed Supreme Court Secretariat, in addition to his existing responsibilities.

"Until further orders, he will act as the administrative head of both the Supreme Court Registry and the Supreme Court Secretariat," a SC press release said today.

According to sub-sections (2) and (4) of section 4 of the Supreme Court Secretariat Ordinance, overall control of the secretariat will rest with the chief justice.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Judicial Service Association (BJSA), a body of the lower court judges, today congratulated the interim government for issuing the ordinance and urged the government to urgently establish the SC Secretariat and to complete all necessary tasks, including issuing the gazette notification required to operationalise the secretariat.

International Crimes Tribunal's Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam told the media that through the ordinance, a long-standing demand of the people, including judicial officers who want to see the rule of law, has been fulfilled and upheld.
