A fire that broke out in a cotton warehouse a cotton warehouse at Tongi in Gazipur, has been brought under control by fire service teams after two hours of intense efforts.
The fire started around 12 PM on Saturday at a warehouse located near Mill Gate area on Station Road at Tongi. The blaze engulfed at least seven warehouses, producing thick smoke over the surrounding area.
Tongi Fire Service Senior officer Shahin Alam told media that multiple fire units were immediately dispatched to the site upon receiving the news.
Seven units from three stations worked for about two hours before bringing the fire under control around 1:30 PM, he said.
No casualties have been reported so far. The exact cause of the fire and the total extent of the damage will be determined after investigation, added the Fire Service official.
Fire service officials noted that cotton is highly flammable, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. Limited water availability at the scene also made firefighting efforts challenging. Locals assisted the firefighters in controlling the blaze.
According to fire service records, the alert was received at 11:45 AM and units arrived at the scene by 11:49 AM, immediately starting containment efforts.
