Begum Rokeya University students demanded 3 clause in human chain at Campus Main gate of the university on Sunday.
Students demanded that founding name "Rangpur University" would be renamed of Begum Rokeya University, ensured accommodation of every student and taking step to establish form a full-fledged university by arranging 44 departments under 8 faculties.
During this time, slogans were raised, "We want the name of the establishment back, we have to give it", "We do not accept the name given by dictatorship, we will not have it", "We must accept the public verdict of the students, we have to give it", "We have to give 100% housing, we have to give it".
Shamsuzzaman Sumon, coordinator of anti-discrimination student movement, said that the autocratic government has cheated the people of Rangpur by changing its name to Rangpur University. We do not want to change the name, we want to restore the name "Rangpur University". When the teachers and students protested during the name change of this university, they were tagged Jamaat-Shibir and women haters. The name of this university should be returned as soon as possible. We have three demands to fulfill. Students of this university do not want to be left behind. If the demands are not met then a strict agitation will be called.
Rahmat Ali, Member Secretary of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, Rangpur Metropolis, said that the name "Rangpur University" representing Rangpur region should be reinstated. In a survey, 85% of the students of the university voted in favor of the restoration of the name. Students have to renew their claim. We students do not accept discrimination, we want relief from housing crisis. Along with this, according to the university ordinance, quick steps should be taken to open 44 departments under 8 faculties.
It should be noted that the journey started of Rangpur University on October 12, 2008, but in 2009 it was renamed as 'Begum Rokeya University' after the pioneer of Bengali women's awakening, Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain. It was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
