Rishad fires late again as Bangladesh post 213 in spin-dominated contest

Rishad Hossain once again provided a late-innings flourish to guide Bangladesh to 213 for 7 after the West Indies became the first full-member nation to bowl 50 consecutive overs of spin in a One-Day International, during the second ODI of the series at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur on Tuesday.

After winning the toss, Bangladesh chose to bat first on another extreme spin-friendly wicket, sticking to the same approach that brought them success in the first game of the three-match series.

The West Indies, however, arrived better prepared this time and made history in the process. For the first time in their ODI history, they opened the bowling with spinners from both ends, a clear indication of how much faith they placed in their slow bowlers on this surface.

Their plan paid off early. Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the fifth over when Saif Hasan (6 off 16) edged Akeal Hosein to Justin Greaves at first slip in the 4.4 over, leaving the hosts at 15 for 1.

Despite the early breakthrough, Bangladesh managed a steady start, reaching 40 in the batting powerplay. But the momentum didn’t last long. Towhid Hridoy, promoted to number three in a matchup-based move, misjudged a slog sweep off Gudakesh Motie and was caught in the deep after making 12 off 19 balls in the 10.3 over.

At the other end, Soumya Sarkar and Najmul Hossain Shanto began to stitch together a partnership, attempting to stabilize the innings against relentless spin from all corners. But their resistance was short-lived. In the 17.2 over, Najmul (15) who had started to look comfortable mistimed a pull shot off a short ball from part-timer Alick Athanaze, who went on to have a remarkable debut, bowling 10 overs for just 14 runs and taking two wickets.

Mahidul Islam Ankon (17) soon became Athanaze’s second victim, failing to clear the deep backward square leg fielder as Bangladesh slipped to 96 for 4. The slide continued when Soumya, the only set batter at that stage, perished to Akeal Hosein, slog-sweeping straight to mid-wicket. His 45 came off 89 balls, featuring three fours and a six, leaving Bangladesh reeling at 103 for 5.

From there, skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to rebuild the innings through small but crucial partnerships. He first added some resistance with Nasum Ahmed, who made 12 runs to help the hosts inch closer to the 40-over mark. Later, Nurul Hasan Sohan injected some momentum with a lively 23 off 24 balls, striking two fours and a six to lift the tempo and pave the way for a late assault.

That late assault once again came from Rishad, who had smashed 26 off 13 balls in the first ODI. The leg-spinning all-rounder replicated that impact, this time hammering an unbeaten 39 off just 14 balls, including three fours and three sixes, at a staggering strike rate of 278.

His late blitz transformed what looked like a modest total into a competitive one, as he and Miraz added 50 runs off just 24 balls for the unbeaten eighth-wicket stand.

Miraz himself anchored the innings with an unbeaten 32 off 58 balls, holding the tail together and ensuring Bangladesh batted through the 50 overs.

For the West Indies, Gudakesh Motie continued his fine form with the ball, finishing with 3 wickets, while Akeal Hosein and Alick Athanaze claimed two wickets apiece.
