Detectives arrested 12 more leaders and activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, including a former mayor of Gafargaon municipality in Mymensingh, during drives in different areas of Dhaka yesterday.
According to a press statement issued today, all of them are accused in multiple cases filed with different police stations on specific charges.
Police said they were allegedly involved in efforts to destabilise the country by disrupting law and order and spreading panic among the public.
The arrestees are Yunus Ali alias Ilias, 52, a union level leader in Barguna; Shamim Osman, 37, a Jubo League leader of Gazipur, Mahmud Dewan Shipu, 36, and Jamil Hossain, 35, AL leaders of Dhaka South City unit; Advocate Kaiser Ahmed, 57, former liberation war affairs secretary of the central Jubo League and ex-mayor of Gafargaon municipality; Soleman, 44, vice-president of Ward-53 Krishak League in Dhaka North City unit; Ikramul Hasan Rubel, 34, former president of Ward-67 Swechchasebak League of Dhaka South; Kazi Alid Islam, 54, A Jubo League in Tangail; Khairul Islam alias Jewel Khan, 47, a Sramik League leader in Dhaka Cantonment Thana unit; Sajib Khan, 33, a ward level Chhatra League leader in Dhaka; Aslam Khan, 49, a ward level leader in Darussalam Police Station; and Hiru Mia, 56, president of Kaliakoir upazila Jubo League.
Police said legal action against them is underway.
