The University of Dhaka has decided to appeal a High Court verdict that nullified the expulsion of students accused of the killing of Abu Bakar Siddique, a third-year student of the Islamic History and Culture department in 2010.
A statement issued today clarifies that DU authorities made this decision in pursuit of justice.
Abu Bakar was fatally injured during a clash between two groups of a student organisation at Sir AF Rahman Hall in 2010. He succumbed to his injuries while under treatment at a hospital.
In response to the incident, DU's syndicate expelled ten students temporarily. Two of them later filed separate writ petitions challenging the expulsions. In 2012, the High Court declared the expulsions invalid.
Believing that justice for Abu Bakar's death can only be achieved through further legal proceedings, DU has opted to take the matter to a higher court, officials confirmed.
