A convoy carrying uranium for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant left Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport for the plant on Saturday under tight security.
The convoy, comprising three lorries, began its journey at about 7:15 a.m. Army personnel, along with members of the SRB, police and intelligence agencies, are providing security.
The aircraft carrying the nuclear fuel landed at the airport at about 11:30 p.m. on Friday. Officials from the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Regulatory Authority then received the shipment.
Between November and December, 48 additional uranium assemblies for the first unit and 163 for the second unit are scheduled to arrive in Bangladesh on nine flights.
The shipments are planned to travel from Russia through Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and India before reaching Bangladesh.
The uranium had initially been scheduled to arrive on September 24, but the shipment was delayed due to complications over the use of Pakistani airspace.
Fuel for Rooppur's first unit had previously arrived in 2023 and was loaded into the reactor in May this year.
