Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has assured full government support to develop Bangladesh's tea industry, increase production and resolve long-standing challenges sustainably.
He made the assurance at a meeting on the tea industry at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday (July 26).
Tea garden owners and industry representatives raised concerns over rising production and energy costs, financing difficulties, international competition and other challenges. They also submitted proposals for the industry's sustainable development.
The Prime Minister described the tea industry as an important part of the national economy and said the government would provide the necessary policy, financial and institutional support.
He said the government would positively consider easing existing debt obligations, providing low-interest loans and allowing solar power generation on land unsuitable for cultivation. He also stressed support for renewable energy projects.
The Prime Minister directed the formation of a committee comprising the relevant ministries, departments and stakeholders to quickly identify the industry's problems and ensure effective solutions.
