A sudden fire broke out in a slum at the I Block area under Halishahar Police Station in the port city of Chattogram on Tuesday morning (June 2) around 9:00 am, triggering panic among residents. Thanks to the rapid response of the Fire Service, a major disaster and possible loss of lives were successfully averted.

According to local sources, the fire originated suddenly in one section of the densely populated slum and spread quickly, forcing residents to flee their homes in fear. The incident created chaotic scenes as people rushed to safe locations amid panic and confusion.

Upon receiving the alert, four firefighting units from Agrabad and Bandar Fire Stations were immediately deployed to the scene. Firefighters worked for nearly 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading further to nearby houses.

Agrabad Fire Service senior station officer Zahirul Islam confirmed that the teams responded promptly after receiving the report at around 9:00 am and managed to control the fire within a short time.

He added that the extent of damage and the number of affected houses could not be confirmed immediately. An investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire and assess the losses.

Fire Service officials said no casualties have been reported so far. However, local residents claimed that several families lost furniture and essential household belongings in the incident.

Locals also highlighted that slum areas remain highly vulnerable to fire incidents due to tangled electrical wiring, highly flammable materials, and narrow access roads. They urged authorities to take preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.

The Fire Service has launched a detailed investigation, and a full report will be released after the inquiry is completed.
