The prime accused Monir Hossain on Friday confessed before a court that he raped a four-year-old girl in Chattogram city the previous day.
The court of Hakim Abu Bakar Siddique recorded the confessional statement, and sent him to the jail, said Bakolia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Solaiman.
Notably, the child is now in stable condition following treatment at the One Stop Crisis Centre at Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
The rape incident drew attention on Thursday afternoon after a mob besieged a police team, which had Manir in their custody, and demanded officers hand the “culprit” over to them.
Intermittent clashes between the mob and police continued till 10pm, when officers finally managed to sneak Manir out to a confidential location.
Police are working to file a case over the clash that left 30 police personnel and 10 journalists injured.
Earlier, on Thursday afternoon, Manir lured a four-year-girl with a chocolate and led her to a warehouse, where he raped her. Later, locals found the girl, a daughter of working parents, in an unconscious state on the stairs of the building.
Upon being informed, her parents rushed her to a hospital, and the police reached the spot to detain the suspect.
The incident took place at Chairmanghat area under Bakolia Police Station of Chattogram city.
Manir hailed from Cumilla, and worked in a decorator outlet in the area.
