Three arrested over Manikganj killing, confess to crime

Published : Saturday, 28 March, 2026 at 2:49 PM  Count : 123

Police have arrested three people in connection with the recovery of a headless body from the Kaliganga River in Manikganj, with all suspects confessing to their involvement in the murder.

The victim was identified as Rafiq Mia, 28, an autorickshaw driver from Baniajuri village in Ghior upazila. His severed head has not yet been recovered, though efforts are underway based on information provided by the arrested individuals.

Superintendent of Police (SP) of the Manikganj Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), Joyita Shilpi, disclosed the details at a press briefing this morning.

She said Rafiq was taken to the banks of the Kaliganga River in the Pach-Baroil area of Nabagram union in Sadar upazila on the night of March 24 by his friends -- construction workers Ripon, Sajib, and Arman -- on the pretext of consuming marijuana.

"After taking him there, they attacked and killed him. They then disposed of his body in the river. Although the head sank in the water, the body floated, which is why they mutilated the body and left it on the riverbank," she said.

Using technological assistance, Ripon Mia, 30, was arrested from the Kalampur Bazar area of Dhamrai upazila around 2:00pm on March 26. Based on the information he provided, Arman and Sajib were arrested, and the operation to recover the head is ongoing.

The arrested individuals have confessed to police that they were involved in the murder.

"Ripon told us that he committed the murder with the intention of looting Rafiq's auto-rickshaw," the SP said.

In this incident, the deceased's elder brother, Arif Mia, filed a complaint with Manikganj Sadar Police Station, accusing three people.
