Police arrested a youth this afternoon on allegations of "hurting religious sentiments" with a Facebook post in Nekmarad Bazar of Thakurgaon’s Ranishankoil upazila.
The 19-year-old accused is a resident of Nekmarad Parkunda village of the upazila and a student of a local college, said police.
Rahmatullah Rony, sub-inspector of Ranishankoil Police Station and the investigating officer (IO) of the case, told that a Facebook post was made by the accused around 9:08am which "hurt religious sentiments".
The post quickly spread, triggering anger among locals, he said.
On information, police went to the area and detained him from a cattle market in Nekmarad Bazar in the afternoon.
Following the incident, one Mehedi Hasan of the same area filed a case with the police station against the accused.
During primary interrogation, the youth denied posting the content, claiming it was a conspiracy and that he was unaware of how it had been published from his Facebook ID, the IO said.
He also claimed during questioning that after becoming aware of the issue, he deleted the post and went live on Facebook to clear the confusion.
The IO added that the matter would be sent for IT forensic analysis to ascertain the facts, and the findings would clarify the issue.
Court Inspector Md Belal Hossain of Thakurgaon said the accused was produced before a court in the evening, and Senior Judicial Magistrate Tahmidur Rahman sent him to jail.
