The body of Ahnaf Tahmid Khan Raiyan, Economics Department 49th batch student of Jahangirnagar University (JU), has been recovered and identified following a tragic bus accident in the Padma River at Daulatdia Ghat in Rajbari. The news has cast a shadow of grief across the university campus.
His body was identified on Thursday morning at around 5:00am at Rajbari Sadar Hospital by family members and classmates. At the time of the accident, Raiyan was traveling on the same bus with his mother, elder sister, and nephew.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the body of his mother, Rehena Akter (59), was recovered, followed later by the body of his nephew. His elder sister, Dr. Nusrat Jahan Khan, was admitted to the hospital with serious injuries.
After the accident, both Raiyan and his nephew had remained missing for a long time. While the nephew’s body was later recovered, Raiyan’s body was found and identified early this morning.
Niloy Saha Neel, Joint Secretary of the Rajbari Debate Association, confirmed the identification. He said, “My friend Raiyan was a highly organized and active individual. Many people in the country knew him for his cultural activities. The death of such a brilliant friend is entirely due to state negligence. I don’t think the state will be able to provide any real solution. There will be discussions for a couple of days, and then everything will return to normal.”
Professor Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam, Chairman of the Economics Department at Jahangirnagar University, said, “Raiyan was deeply dedicated to the department. He would always come forward first whenever needed. We cannot accept such a death. The department is deeply saddened by his loss. May Allah grant him, his mother, and his nephew eternal peace.”
