A Dhaka court today issued arrest warrants against 22 students of Dhaka University in a case filed over the killing of 35-year-old Tofazzal Hossain at its Fazlul Haque Muslim Hall in September 2024.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Jewel Rana passed the order after accepting the charge sheet in the case, said a court staffer.

The students against whom arrest warrants were issued are Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Sakib Raihan, Yeasin Ali Gain, Yamuzzaman Yam, Fazle Rabbi, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, Mehedi Hasan Imran, Ratul Hasan, Sultan Mia, Nasir Uddin, Mobasser Billah, Shishir Ahmed, Mohosin Uddin Shafi, Abdullahil Kafi, Sheikh Ramzan Ali Raky, Rashed Kamal Anik, Moniruzzaman Sohag, Abu Raihan, Redwanur Rahman Parvez, Rabbikul Riad and Ashraf Ali Munshi. All of them are absconding.

On December 17 last year, Investigation Officer of the case Md Hannanul Islam, an additional Superintendent of Police at the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), submitted a supplementary charge sheet before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka, naming 28 DU students.

Of the 28 accused, Jalal Mia, Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh, Al Hossain Sazzad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, Md Sumon Mia, and Wajibul Alam gave confessional statements after their arrest.

Amongst the arrested accused, Ahsan and Wajibul are now on bail, according to the case records.

The PBI took charge of the investigation in line with the court directive on February 26 last year.

According to the charge sheet, the incident began around 2:00pm on September 18, 2024, during a cricket match at the hall field, when six mobile phones were stolen. Later that evening, around 7:45pm, Tofazzal arrived at the field during a football match and was suspected of the theft. Students then punched and kicked him before taking him to the hall’s guest room.

The attackers demanded Tk 35,000 from his family as compensation. When his uncle, Abdur Rob Mia, refused to pay, they became enraged and beat Tofazzal with a cricket stump and bamboo stick, leading to his death.

After the killing, relatives told the media that Tofazzal had "lost his mind" following the deaths of his parents and brother and had become a drifter.

Mohammad Amanullah, a supervisor at the DU estate office, filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station the following day.
