Ahead of the holy month of Ramadan, a comprehensive market monitoring drive has been conducted in Sreemangal, Moulvibazar, to keep the prices of essential commodities stable.

The monitoring campaign was carried out on Wednesday (February 19, 2026) in various key roads and marketplaces of the town under a joint initiative of the Upazila Administration, the District Office of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection, Sreemangal Municipality, and the Sreemangal Business Association.

The drive was led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) and Municipal Administrator Md. Islam Uddin. During the operation, officials ensured the mandatory display of price lists, checked the accuracy of weights and measures, monitored the supply situation of essential goods, and reviewed various aspects related to the protection of consumer rights.

Prices of Ramadan-related high-demand items—including rice, lentils, edible oil, sugar, chickpeas, dates, and onions—were inspected on the spot. Several দোকানে visible price lists were not displayed; those shopkeepers were immediately warned and instructed to comply with the regulations. Traders were cautioned against creating artificial shortages, charging excessive profits, or engaging in fraudulent practices in weights and measures.

UNO Md. Islam Uddin said that the demand for essential goods increases during Ramadan, and the administration will conduct regular market inspections to prevent any unjustified price hikes. He also affirmed that strict measures would be taken to safeguard consumer interests.

Deputy Director of the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection in Moulvibazar, Md. Al Amin, stated that the department remains active in ensuring transparency and fairness in the market. “Displaying price lists, preventing adulteration and fraud, and ensuring accurate measurements are our primary goals. Legal action will be taken if any irregularities are proven,” he added.

Executive Engineer of Sreemangal Municipality, Md. Jahirul Islam, said that the municipality is assisting in maintaining cleanliness and proper market management. Efforts are being made, in coordination with traders, to ensure an orderly and consumer-friendly market environment.

General Secretary of the Sreemangal Business Association, Haji Kamal Hossain, said that traders are always willing to work in coordination with the administration. He assured that the business community would play a responsible role in maintaining market stability during Ramadan and urged traders to refrain from unreasonable price increases.

A team from Sreemangal Police Station assisted in maintaining law and order during the monitoring drive. Officials from various government departments, business leaders, and local journalists were also present.

Meanwhile, the initiative has been welcomed by Comrade Syed Amiruzzaman, Member of the District Secretariat of the Workers Party of Bangladesh (Moulvibazar), Editor of RP News, and a noted columnist. In a reaction, he emphasized that regular and effective monitoring must continue to prevent unscrupulous traders from destabilizing the market during Ramadan. He also stressed that social and political organizations should play a proactive role alongside the administration.

Authorities concerned stated that such joint market monitoring activities will continue throughout Ramadan, and measures will be taken to promptly address any complaints from consumers.
