Two people were killed and several others injured today after a bus plunged into a roadside ditch on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Jingatali area of Daudkandi.

The deceased were identified as Faruk, 42, an auto-rickshaw driver from Bahadurkhola village in Daudkandi upazila, and Mizanur Rahman, 48, a bus passenger from Boalia village in Chuadanga Sadar upazila, said police.

Quoting witnesses, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Bahar Majumder of Daudkandi Police Station said the incident occurred around 3:50pm when a Chattogram-bound Econo Paribahan bus lost control, hit an auto-rickshaw and plunged into a roadside ditch.

Dr Habibur Rahman, health officer at Daudkandi Upazila Health Complex, said the bodies are currently at the facility. He added that five injured passengers were referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment, while two others received primary treatment and returned home.

OC Iqbal said firefighters, police and local residents carried out a rescue operation after the crash. The bus driver and his assistant fled the scene and are still absconding.
