Dhaka University (DU) Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan has said he is prepared to step down from his post but is willing to continue for a few more days if requested by stakeholders and the elected government to ensure continuity and avoid an administrative vacuum.

He made the remarks at an emergency press conference held at Prof Abdul Matin Chowdhury Virtual Classroom, adjacent to the Vice-Chancellor’s office, at 3pm on Tuesday.

Addressing the media, Prof Niaz said he had assumed office during an emergency situation and had tried to discharge his responsibilities to the best of his ability.

“At this stage, I want to step down so that the elected political government can organise the administration in its own way. However, if stakeholders want me to stay for the sake of continuity and to reduce any vacuum, I will consider it,” he said.

The DU VC clarified that he has not formally submitted any resignation letter. He added that he would continue to perform his duties until the elected government takes office and would extend full cooperation to the new administration.
