A two-day national inter-college debate competition, organized to commemorate the life and leadership of Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, began at Gono Bishwabidyalay (GB) today.
The "Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury Memorial Inter-College National Debate Competition–2026," hosted by the Gono Bishwabidyalay Debating Society (GBDS), was inaugurated at 10:00am at the university’s academic building. A total of 20 teams from across the country are competing for the title.
Addressing the inaugural session as chief guest, GB Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md Abul Hossain underscored that the event reflects the vision of the university's founder. "Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury’s philosophy was rooted in ensuring inclusive education and fostering leadership. In alignment with his ideals, GB became the first private university to establish a central student union," the VC noted, adding that such platforms are instrumental in shaping future leaders.
GBDS Advisor and Assistant Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Md Ekhlas Uddin, observed that the society continues to provide a vital space for students to hone their analytical skills.
GBDS President Ariful Islam Bulbul said the organisation, located within the university's 32-acre campus, has been a cornerstone in nurturing logic and rationality among the youth.
The opening day featured the quarter-final rounds, attended by faculty members and leaders of the Central Student Union. The competition will conclude with the grand finale tomorrow, Saturday.
