JnU Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed murdered over love triangle: Police

Jagannath University (JnU) student and Chhatra Dal leader Md Jobayed Hossain was allegedly murdered over a love affair involving his student, Barjis Shabnam Barsha, and her boyfriend, Mahir Rahman.

Banshal Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rafiqul Islam revealed the information to reporters on Monday morning.

“Barsha and Mahir had been in a relationship for nine years,” OC Rafiqul said. “Mahir, a student of Burhan Uddin College, and Barsha, a student at Dhaka Mohanagar Mohila College, grew up in the same neighborhood and were close since childhood. Their relationship began when they were in class four.”

The OC added that their long-term relationship had recently soured. “A few days ago, Barsha told Mahir that she liked Jobayed, which enraged him, and one of his friends killed Jobayed,” he said.

Police said that there had been no love messages or contact between Jobayed and Barsha. “She told Mahir that she liked Jobayed but never expressed it to him. Based on her words, Mahir and his friend committed the murder out of anger.”

The OC also said that Barsha remained calm and composed throughout. We will continue with further investigation. She also denied that she had any prior knowledge of the murder.

However, no case has yet to be filed more than 14 hours after the killing. Jobayed’s family alleged that they tried to file a case, but police refused to record it as of 10.00 am Monday.

Jobayed’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Saikat, said, “We wanted to file a case naming five accused—Barsha, her parents, her boyfriend Mahir Rahman, and Mahir’s friend Nafis. But the OC advised us not to include so many names, especially Barsha’s parents, saying it would weaken the case.”

OC of Bangshal police station Rafiqul Islam said, “We will take the case but advised them to discuss the matter with university teachers first before filing.”

Jubayed, a postgraduate student of the Statistics department (2019–20 session) at Jagannath University and a member of the convening committee of the university unit of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, was stabbed to death on the staircase of a house in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area, where he had gone to give tuition on Sunday afternoon.

Students of the university staged demonstrations in front of Banshal Police Station, set fires, and blocked the Tatibazar intersection, demanding the immediate arrest of the killers.

At around 11 pm, police took Barsha into custody from her residence after extensive questioning. Jobayed’s body was sent to Mitford Hospital for autopsy at 10:50 pm.
