Teachers and employees of non-government educational institutions under the MPO scheme have rejected the government’s decision to grant a 5 percent house rent allowance or a minimum of Tk 2,000.
They also declared that they will continue their ongoing protest, demanding a 20 percent allowance instead.
The announcement came on Sunday during their sit-in and hunger strike at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka, now on its eighth consecutive day.
Earlier in the day, the Finance Division issued a gazette signed by Mariam Mitu, deputy secretary of the Regulation Sub-division, approving the house rent allowance at 5 percent of the basic salary or a minimum of Tk 2,000, citing budgetary constraints.
The protesting teachers rejected the decision, calling it “insufficient and unjust.” They announced a hunger march toward the Education Bhaban at 12 p.m. as part of their next course of action.
The Finance Division stated in the circular that the increase is conditional and based on the government’s current budgetary limitations. But teachers have vowed to continue their protest until their 20 percent demand is met.
