Bangladesh reports six more dengue deaths as September toll rises to 142

Bangladesh has reported six new dengue deaths and 1,942 hospital admissions from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease over the last 24-hour count.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the latest figures had taken this year’s dengue death toll to 239, with 142 deaths recorded in September alone, the highest monthly total so far this year.

According to the DGHS bulletin released on Tuesday, 178 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation and 229 in Dhaka South during the period.

Outside the two city corporations, 378 patients were admitted in other hospitals across Dhaka Division.

In addition, Chattogram recorded 301 admissions, while Barishal reported 213, Khulna 264, Rajshahi 197, Mymensingh 120, Rangpur 56 and Sylhet six.

A total of 1,751 dengue patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours, according to the bulletin.

So far this year, 77,672 people have been hospitalised with dengue, while 72,008 have recovered and been discharged.

The health directorate has kept records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. The highest number of hospitalisations was recorded in 2023, when 321,179 people were admitted and 1,705 died from the disease.

More than 400 people died from dengue last year, while around 102,000 cases were recorded.
