Canadian prime minister Mark Carney says Canada has pledged $100 million in new aid for Palestine, reported Canada-based CBC.ca News on Tuesday.Carney announced the funding on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Tuesday in an effort to preserve ‘the possibility of a two-state solution,’ the report added available online.
According to the report, the funding includes $80 million in humanitarian aid, while the rest is development funding for security initiatives, including top-up funds for a multi-year project to train police in the West Bank.
He said Palestinians in Gaza are experiencing ‘immense human suffering’ while Israelis face ‘existential threats from Hamas and from Iran and its proxies.’
Ottawa has pledged more than $600 million in aid for Palestinian civilians since October 2023.
New documents tabled in Parliament this week list the damage done to dozens of Canadian-funded aid projects by Israel’s military and settlers.
Carney also spoke out on Tuesday against Israel’s planned E1 settlement that critics say would split the West Bank in two.
