The latest monthly review from the Manabadhikar Shongskriti Foundation (MSF) should compel our nation and its leaders to pause, and must be heeded as a warning that Bangladesh’s human rights situation is potentially deteriorating across multiple fronts, and fast.
The sheer scale of the increases documented in August should force a national reckoning.
Start with the most vulnerable: Killings of women and children jumped 75%, rising from 52 in July to 91 in August. Violence against women and children climbed to 327 incidents, gang rape rose 72%, rape‑and‑murder cases surged 67%, and suicides increased 39%.
While month to month numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt, the absolute numbers still are signs of a society struggling to protect its most basic rights.
Political violence also spiked sharply. Injuries soared 181%, from 95 to 267, even as deaths dipped slightly. The violence involved activists from across the political spectrum - BNP, NCP, Jamaat, Awami League - showing that no party can claim innocence.
Most alarming, however, is the rise in attacks on minority communities. MSF documented 26 incidents in August, more than triple the eight recorded in July. Idol vandalism, threats, and assaults paint a picture of communities living in fear while the state struggles to respond.
Bangladesh cannot afford complacency. These statistics reflect real people, real suffering, and real failures of protection that citizens of this country have every right to expect.
The state must respond, whether that be through stronger rule of law, credible investigations, or just reassuring the people that they are aware of the situation.
Moreover, every government owes its people unwavering commitment to safeguarding every citizen -- especially those most at risk.
