The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has announced a fresh programme of rallies in seven divisional cities, pressing for the implementation of the referendum verdict on reforms under the July charter.
Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General Hamidur Rahman Azad made the announcement today at a briefing following a liaison committee meeting of the 11-party alliance at Jamaat’s central office in Moghbazar, Dhaka.
According to the announcement, the first rally will be held in Rajshahi on May 16. Subsequent programmes are scheduled for Chattogram on June 13, Khulna on June 20, Mymensingh on June 27, Rangpur on July 11, Barishal on July 18, and Sylhet on July 25.
At the briefing, Azad, who is also the committee’s convener, said only one rally has been scheduled in May due to the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.
“Full-scale movement and rally programmes will resume from June after the Eid holidays,” he said, adding that leaders, activists and people from all districts under the respective divisions will be mobilised for the rallies.
He also said the alliance plans to hold opinion-exchange meetings with different professional groups, including teachers, lawyers, physicians and media professionals, to build public support for the movement.
Speaking at the briefing, National Citizen Party (NCP) Spokesperson Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain said the alliance will continue its street movement alongside divisional rallies to build public opinion in favour of implementing the referendum verdict.
He called for support, cooperation and participation from people across the country.
On April 16, the alliance announced that it would hold mass procession programmes across Dhaka as well as divisional and district towns from April 18 to May 2. At that time, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said at least 12 rallies would be held at divisional levels and in major cities after May 2, with participation from top alliance leaders.
He also said the alliance would hold a “national grand rally” in the capital after completing the divisional programmes.
The alliance has already staged protest marches, rallies and outreach programmes demanding implementation of the referendum verdict on the July charter.
