Law Minister Md. Asaduzzaman Asad said on Monday that the prime minister would make the final decision if anyone acted against public expectations, adding that no one was above the law.

He made the remarks while responding to reporters after inaugurating a new building at Jhenaidah Primary Teachers’ Training Institute (PTI) and attending a tree-planting programme.

Asked about the controversy surrounding State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraque Hossain and his reported resignation, Asaduzzaman said the prime minister would decide the matter.

Addressing criticism from opposition parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami, over the appointment of fertiliser dealers, the minister said the appointments had followed legal procedures.

“No irregularities occurred in this process,” he said, adding that the opposition would criticise the government regardless of its actions.

The government believed those selected had received their rightful share, he said.

On whether teachers listed under the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme could contest local government elections, Asaduzzaman said there was no legal bar preventing them from participating.

He expressed confidence that the local government elections would be held fairly and smoothly and urged the public to maintain confidence in the government.

Earlier, the minister attended a meeting of the management committee of Jhenaidah 250-bed General Hospital as chief guest. Discussions focused on improving healthcare services and the hospital’s overall management.

Those present included Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan; Jhenaidah District BNP President and District Council Administrator MA Mazid; district BNP General Secretary Zahiduzzaman Mona; Jubo Dal Joint General Secretary Asaduzzaman; Deputy Commissioner Md. Noman Hossain; Superintendent of Police Mia Mohammad Ashis Bin Hasan; and Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Kamruzzaman, along with other local officials and political leaders.
