Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has directed authorities to prioritise development projects that deliver long-term public benefits, stressing public interest, accountability, efficiency and the country's future needs.

“Projects that deliver lasting benefits for people will receive priority over those focused merely on visible infrastructure," he said.

The minister made the remarks while addressing a meeting at the Local Government Division conference room at the Secretariat on Wednesday. The meeting reviewed ongoing development projects and proposed new initiatives under the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the 2026–27 fiscal year, with a view to reassessing and restructuring them where necessary.

State Minister for Planning Zonayed Abdur Rahim Saki attended the meeting as the special guest.

At the outset, officials presented an overview of the ADPs for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 fiscal years under the Local Government Division and the Rural Development and Co-operatives Division. They also highlighted the implementation progress of ongoing projects, key challenges and areas requiring restructuring.

Mirza Fakhrul said project selection should be guided not only by visible infrastructure but also by its long-term impact on people's quality of life.

"Projects should not be chosen for popularity. Priority must be given to initiatives that will bring lasting benefits to the people," he said, adding that development planning should be based on where Bangladesh aims to stand over the next five, 10 and even 50 years.

He stressed the need for realistic planning, results-based evaluation and greater caution in project formulation. Alongside approving new projects, he said, the government should revise, restructure or merge similar ongoing projects to improve implementation efficiency.

The minister also reminded officials that public funds come from taxpayers and must be spent responsibly. He called for ensuring value for money through timely implementation, quality work, cost efficiency and stronger accountability.

Describing the Local Government Division as one of the government's key implementing agencies, Mirza Fakhrul said it plays a crucial role in infrastructure development, safe water supply, sanitation, waste management, strengthening local government institutions, rural development and employment generation.

He urged officials and employees to perform their duties with greater sincerity, professionalism and accountability.

Highlighting the importance of waste management, the minister said there is no alternative to modern waste management systems in building a clean and green Bangladesh. He called for sustainable, timely and practical projects to bring visible improvements to the sector.
