A student of class three was allegedly raped in a village of Sreemangal upazila in Moulvibazar this morning. Locals detained the accused before handing him over to police.

According to the victim’s father, the incident occurred around 7:00am when the girl was on her way to a maktab for religious classes.

The accused, identified as 42-year-old Anwar Mia, allegedly lured her to his house under the pretext of buying tiffin for the imam, said the child's father. The child was reportedly held captive for nearly two hours, during which she was raped. She managed to escape when the accused briefly left the room and was later found by her mother in a distressed state near a local graveyard.

Acting on the child's account, locals apprehended Anwar and handed him over to law enforcement.

Sarkar Abdul Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of Sreemangal Police Station, confirmed that police were alerted around 11:50am after locals detained the man on rape charges.

“We went to the spot and brought the accused to the police station. Further legal proceedings will follow once the victim’s family submits a formal written complaint,” he said.
