A man was hacked to death inside a mosque during Fajr prayers in Sreemangal upazila of Moulvibazar on Sunday (3 May), triggering shock and panic in the area.
The deceased, identified as Hafiz Mia, was a resident of the Loyer Kula area. The accused, Jasim Mia—also from the same locality—has been detained by police.
According to eyewitnesses, Hafiz went to the West Loyer Kula Jame Mosque at dawn to offer Fajr prayers. While preparing for the prayer, Jasim suddenly attacked him and struck him indiscriminately with a sharp weapon inside the mosque leaving him dead on the spot.
Police later conducted a raid and detained the suspect.
Locals said they were unable to determine the motive behind the killing, but the incident has caused widespread alarm in the area.
Officer-in-Charge of Sreemangal Police Station, Sheikh Zahurul Islam Munna, said police rushed to the scene upon receiving information and apprehended the attacker.
“He is currently in our custody. An investigation is underway to uncover the motive behind the murder, and necessary legal action will be taken against the accused,” he added.
