Departmental workshop held in Barisal to develop MPDSR response plan

“Divisional Workshop on MPDSR Response Plan Development in Barisal” was held yesterday in the conference room of the Divisional Director (Health) of Barisal with the participation of Civil Surgeons of all the districts of Barisal Division and Superintendents of District Sadar Hospitals. Important workshop titled. The workshop was organized by the Divisional Director (Health), Barisal, and technical assistance was provided by CIPRB and UNFPA Bangladesh.

The workshop was presided over by Barisal Division Director (Health) Dr. Shyamal Krishna Mondal, who said, “MPDSR is not just a process of keeping track of deaths. It is a powerful tool for identifying weaknesses in the health system and taking timely and effective action. Maternal and neonatal deaths "Our main challenge is to implement the 'Response' part of the MPDSR at the field level for prevention."

Speaking as a special guest, Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Halim, Director, Reproductive and Child Health Dept, CIPRB, said,
“Most maternal and perinatal deaths are preventable. These deaths can be significantly reduced by identifying deaths, analyzing causes, and adopting evidence-based response plans.”

Participated and spoke at the workshop:
Mohammad Abul Kalam — Divisional Director (Family Planning), Barisal Division Dr. Shafiqul Islam — Assistant Director (DC), BDHO Dr. Md. Saiful Hasan — Assistant Director (Admin), BDHO Professor Dr. Rebecca Khanam — Head, Gynecology Department Dr. C. M. Manzoor A. A. Lahi — Civil Surgeon, Barisal District Dr. Mohammad Abul Fatah — Civil Surgeon, Barguna District Dr. Mohammad Khaledur Rahman Mia — Civil Surgeon, Patuakhali District Dr. Md. Matiur Rahman — Civil Surgeon, Pirojpur District Each of them was present at the workshop and gave important speeches on MPDSR.

Brigadier General Dr. A. K. M. Masiul Munir, Director, SBMCH Barisal said,  “To make MPDSR activities regular and standardized, it is essential to increase the capacity of health workers at the district and upazila levels and strengthen inter-departmental coordination.”

Bhola District Civil Surgeon Dr. Md. Monirul Islam said, "In Bhola district, it has been possible to identify vulnerable areas and service gaps through MPDSR activities. Districts will be able to work more effectively if there is a coordinated response plan at the divisional level."

Dr. Md. Taibur Rahman, Superintendent of Bhola 250-bed General Hospital, said, “If hospital-based MPDSR reviews are strengthened, the quality of referral management, emergency obstetric care, and neonatal care will improve.”

Dr. Abu Saeed Md. Abdullah, Deputy Director, Reproductive and Child Health Dept, CIPRB said, "To make the MPDSR program successful, coordination between health workers, civil surgeons, and hospital supervisors needs to be strengthened. With the cooperation of local administration and community, it is possible to significantly reduce maternal and perinatal mortality."

The workshop participants agreed that the role of MPDSR is important in monitoring, reviewing, analyzing, and developing effective response plans for maternal and neonatal deaths at the district and upazila levels of Barisal division.
