A Swechchhasebak Dal leader was killed during a clash between two groups of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) at Nangalkot upazila in Cumilla district on Saturday afternoon.
The clash occurred at around 3:00PM at Banggadda Bazar in the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Selim Bhuiyan, 45, the president of Heshakhal union Swechchhasebak Dal.
Locals said that a rally, led by Mobassar Alam, the president of the upazila unit of BNP, was scheduled to be held at Banggadda Bazar. At that time, the supporters of Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan, a former member of parliament, were crossing the bazar in a car fleet. A clash then erupted between the two groups, resulting in Selim Bhuiyan's death.
Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan claimed that Selim was his supporter.
Abdur Rahim, the brother of the deceased, said, "Selim Bhuiyan had been involved in BNP's politics and was a follower of Abdul Gafur Bhuiyan. Mobassar Alam Bhuiyan's supporters attacked and killed him while he was on his way to Gafur Bhuiyan's rally. I want justice for the killing of my brother. I want to know from the central committee leaders of the party why BNP members killed another BNP leader."
AK Fazlul Haque, officer-in-charge of Nangalkot Police Station, said that a man was killed in a clash between two BNP groups. The body has been kept at the Cumilla Sadar Hospital.
Law enforcement agencies are working to bring the situation under control, he added.
