A special court today imposed a travel ban on former secretary Abu Alam Md Shahid Khan over corruption allegations.
Judge Md Sabbir Faiz of the Metropolitan Senior Special Judge’s Court issued the order following a petition by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Assistant Director Sazzad Hossain, who is leading the inquiry, court bench assistant Riaz Hossain said.
According to the ACC petition, Shahid Khan is under investigation for corruption and money laundering.
"During the inquiry, it has been learned from confidential sources that Shahid Khan is attempting to leave the country and flee abroad. Therefore, in the interest of a fair and proper inquiry, it is absolutely necessary to prevent him from traveling overseas," the petition said.
Shahid Khan was sent to jail on September 8 last year in an anti-terrorism case, hours after being arrested in Eskaton, even though his name was not on the FIR.
Earlier on August 29 last year, police had filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station against 16 people, including former minister and expelled Awami League leader Abdul Latif Siddique, Dhaka University law professor Sheikh Hafizur Rahman, journalist Monjurul Alam Panna, and freedom fighter Golam Mostafa.
They were accused of inciting terrorism through a speech delivered under the platform Mancho 71.
The case statement said Latif Siddique conspired to destabilise the country and overthrow the interim government. The case additionally named 70 to 80 unidentified individuals.
