To showcase Bengal’s indigenous theatrical traditions, musical drama, and folk cultural heritage in a renewed form, the Bhoirobee group has organised a cultural festival titled “Gitranga Festival”.
The festival began on Saturday and will run until February 2, with programmes scheduled at multiple venues across Dhaka. The lineup includes film screenings, musical evenings, and Gitranga performances.
As part of the opening day’s events, legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray’s classic film “Heerak Rajar Deshe” was screened on Saturday at 6 pm at the Bhoirobee office in Dhanmondi.
On the second day, Sunday, a musical evening titled “Gitol Shondha” will take place at 7 pm at Stage 2 (Chilekotha) of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.
The festival will conclude on February 2 with the staging of the Gitranga production “Sonai” at 6 pm at the Studio Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The play is written and directed by Eleas Nobi Faisal.
Speaking about the festival, Eleas Nobi Faisal, founder and theatre director of the Bhoirobee Gitranga group, told that, “Gitranga is not just a performance to us; it is an artistic language rooted in the soil of Bengal. Through this festival, we want to reconnect musical drama and folk theatre traditions with the new generation in a fresh way. Our main goal is to create a living bond between the audience and the artistes.”
The Bhoirobee group has long been engaged in preserving and promoting Bengal’s cultural heritage through indigenous theatre, Gitranga, and folk cultural practices.
According to the organisers, the festival is expected to generate interest in indigenous culture among the younger generation and encourage alternative theatre practices. All events under the festival are open to the public free of charge.
