No more vote rigging in the country: Jamaat ameer

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said that he does not want to see any more “vote rigging” in the country, stressing that only those who can prevent extortion, land grabbing, and violence—even by members of their own parties—can deliver a beautiful Bangladesh in the future.

He made the remarks on Thursday while addressing an election rally at Adarsha School ground in the capital’s Mirpur.

Shafiqur said people would ensure victory for the “Yes” vote in the referendum to bring about change in what he described as a decayed political culture and power structure.

Warning against any form of abuse or humiliation of women, he said Jamaat would not tolerate misconduct involving the dignity of mothers and sisters.

“We want women to perform their professional responsibilities with dignity. Their safety will be ensured 100%,” he said, adding that the party is committed to guaranteeing women’s security in workplaces and on the streets.

“Men and women together will build the Bangladesh of tomorrow,” he said, cautioning that while many things may be tolerated, no compromise would be made when it comes to the dignity of mothers. “If anyone crosses that line, there will be consequences.”

Shafiqur also spoke against extortion, saying that besides government taxes, there exists an illegal “unofficial tax” collected through coercion—even from beggars on the streets.

“InshaAllah, this extortion in the name of tax will be stopped. Voting for the 10-party alliance means voting ‘Yes’ against extortion,” he said, adding that people would deliver a verdict against corruption this time.

Stating that people no longer want to see the shadow of fascism, he said, “We do not want to see any more vote rigging.”

He alleged that due to the absence of justice, corrupt individuals have siphoned off national wealth abroad and built luxury enclaves overseas.

“We do not want to see fascism in this country anymore,” he said, warning that if a new form of fascism emerges under a different guise, its fate would be similar to that of 5 August.

Recalling martyr Osman Hadi, the Jamaat ameer said, “Earlier there was one Osman Hadi; now 180 million Hadis have been created.”

Addressing Hadi symbolically, he added, “Brother Hadi, we promise you that we will not stop our struggle until the dream for which you fought is fully realised.”

Leaders and activists of Jamaat and Islami Chhatra Shibir, representatives of the 10-party alliance, and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam were also present at the rally.
