Another 36 Bangladeshis deported from the US

As part of its crackdown on illegal immigration, the United States has deported another 36 Bangladeshi nationals.

The 36 returnees, including one woman, arrived at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 12pm on Tuesday on a special US military flight.

With this, the number of Bangladeshis deported from the United States since the beginning of 2025 has risen to 293.

Shariful Hasan, associate director of BRAC’s Migration and Youth Platform, said BRAC, with support from the expatriate welfare desk and Aviation Security (AVSEC), provided emergency assistance, including transportation, to the returnees upon their arrival at the airport.

Of the 36 deportees, 21 are from Noakhali, two from Lakshmipur, and one each from Munshiganj, Dhaka, Lalmonirhat, Shariatpur, Barguna, Feni, Sirajganj, Gazipur, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Cumilla, Chattogram and Netrokona.

According to BRAC’s Migration Programme, most of the 36 returnees had initially travelled legally to Brazil after obtaining clearance from the Bureau of Manpower, Employment and Training (BMET). They later entered the United States illegally via Mexico. Although they applied for asylum, their applications were eventually rejected after a prolonged legal process, prompting the US administration to deport them to Bangladesh.

Shariful Hasan said that a total of 1,320 Bangladeshis travelled to Brazil in 2025 with BMET clearance, of whom 951 were from Noakhali alone. It is believed that a large number of them attempted to enter the United States through Mexico.

He added that the government should exercise greater caution before allowing the deployment of more workers to Brazil.

Notably, since Donald Trump began his second term as US president, the crackdown on undocumented immigrants has been intensified. As part of this drive, nationals of different countries, including Bangladeshis, have been deported in several phases.
