Tajul warns against using the term ‘mob’

International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Tajul Islam on Sunday cautioned against the indiscriminate use of the term “mob,” saying that such usage often reflects an underlying mindset aimed at questioning or discrediting the July Uprising.

He made the remarks at a policy dialogue titled “Judicial Independence and the Rule of Law”, held at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Sunday morning.

The dialogue was organised by the Centre for Governance Studies (CGS).

Tajul said incidents of crimes such as mugging or the killing of religious minorities by individuals on the streets cannot be equated with the movement that led to the fall of the Ganabhaban.

“These two cannot be judged in the same way,” he said, adding that extreme caution must be exercised before using the word “mob.”

He further said that if certain quarters are repeatedly using the term “mob” to undermine or cast doubt on the achievements of the revolution that resulted in the fall of the Ganabhaban, they should refrain from doing so.

The chief prosecutor emphasised that careless use of such terminology risks misrepresenting the nature of the movement and unfairly questioning those who took part in the uprising.
