Vote casting for student union elections has ended at Jagannath University amid a largely peaceful and festive atmosphere.
Voting started at 9am in the morning and continued till 3pm. Students already standing in queues in and around polling booths were allowed to cast ballots after 3pm, but no new voter was allowed to join the lines.
Vote counting is set to begin soon, said Election Commissioner Kaniz Fatema Kakoli.
This is the first time the student union elections are being held since the university was founded in 2006.
Around 16,500 students cast their votes at 178 booths across 39 polling centres. Four panels are contesting for key posts. The panels are led by Chhatra Dal, Chhatra Shibir, Chhatra Shakti and a leftist alliance.
As many as 158 candidates vied for 21 posts at Jagannath University Central Students’ Union (JnUCSU). Thirty-three other women candidates are contesting to grab 13 posts at the Nawab Faizunnesa Chowdhury Hall.
