CID officials said DNA samples had been collected from nine families, resulting in the successful identification of these eight martyrs. Efforts to identify the remaining bodies are ongoing.
The department stressed that the entire operation adhered to legal procedures, human rights principles and international standards to ensure transparency, dignity and credibility.
The initiative has helped provide closure to families of missing martyrs while preserving critical forensic evidence for future judicial processes.
During the July 2024 uprising, several male and female martyrs were killed in different parts of Dhaka and initially buried as unidentified at Rayerbazar Graveyard.
Following a government decision, steps were taken to determine their identities, with the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs assigning overall supervision to the CID.
Internationally renowned forensic expert Dr Morris Tidball-Binz conducted a two-day training workshop for CID forensic, DNA, and medical teams.
The exhumation and identification process was subsequently carried out under the leadership of another international forensic expert, Dr Luis Fondebrider, with support from the UN Human Rights Council and following the Minnesota Protocol.
After obtaining court permission, based on a General Diary filed at Mohammadpur Police Station, a total of 114 bodies were exhumed, autopsied, and sampled for DNA.
A temporary morgue was established at Rayerbazar Graveyard, where forensic work took place between 7 and 27 December 2025.
CID officials confirmed that identification work for the remaining martyrs will continue until all possible victims are accounted for and returned to their families with full dignity.
