Students of seven government colleges blocked the Mirpur Road in front of Dhaka College on Wednesday afternoon, demanding the government quickly issue the ordinance on establishing a dedicated university for them.
The students threatened they would continue their movement until the ordinance on “Dhaka Central University” is issued. They demanded the urgent intervention of the president and education ministry in this regard.
Around 1pm, students brought out a procession from Dhaka College, took a turn around the Science Lab intersection and reached Eden Mohila College. They returned to Dhaka College, and blocked the Mirpur Road in front of the college entrance around 2pm.
To determine the framework of the proposed university, the authorised government officials have collected online opinions from stakeholders, and also held in-person meetings with them.
However, a section of the teachers has voiced strong opposition to the framework currently being discussed, arguing it leaves inadequate space for the existing teachers to enjoy their due benefits. Teachers also claim the current framework would diminish the historical significance of some of the seven colleges.
